Upwork's fee is different on every contract now
The verdict
Since May 2025 the fee runs 0–15% per contract — the number on YOUR contract is the only one that counts.
Upwork retired its old sliding scale in May 2025. The freelancer service fee is now variable — 0% to 15% depending on the contract — and Upwork shows the exact fee on each contract before you accept it. Older guides quoting a flat 10% or the old 20/10/5 ladder are describing a platform that no longer exists.
About 10% is typical on many contracts, which is why the checker defaults to it — labeled as a typical, never a promise. When a real contract is in front of you, type its real fee in.
And budget the invisible line: proposals spend Connects at $0.15 each whether you win or lose. Ten thoughtful proposals can cost a few dollars and several hours; both belong in your math.
