The eBay fee is on the whole amount, not your price
The verdict
13.6% of everything the buyer pays — item, shipping, and tax — plus a per-order fee.
eBay's final value fee is 13.6% in most categories (12.7% with a Store subscription), plus $0.30 per order up to $10 and $0.40 above. The part that stings beginners: the percentage applies to the total amount the buyer pays, including the shipping you charge and the sales tax on top.
A $40 item with $8 shipping is not a $40 sale to eBay — it is a $48 base, and the fee is $6.53 plus $0.40. Sellers who offer 'free shipping' and raise the price are not gaming the fee; there is no version where shipping escapes it.
The fee also moved this year — 13.25% to 13.6% — which is why this site stamps its fee pages with a checked date. A fee table from last spring is a small lie by summer.
The math, shown
- $48 total × 13.6% = $6.53
- + per-order fee $0.40
- You keep $41.07 of $48 before shipping cost
