Legit or Trap
Penny survey & reward apps
Verdict: Trap-leaning — real pennies, engineered fog
The pitch: The pitch: get paid for surveys and games on your phone — screenshots show balances climbing.
The balances are real. The rate is the trap: reward apps pay in points with a deliberately unclear exchange, because at the computed rate — often under $2 an hour — nobody would open the app. Failing screeners pay nothing, and they are frequent by design.
Prolific is the control experiment: a published $8/hour floor, enforced. The penny apps could publish a floor tomorrow. They choose points instead, and that choice is the verdict.
The tells — spot them in any offer
- Payment quoted in points, gems, or coins
- No page states a minimum $/hour anywhere
- 'Cash out fast!' paired with a $20+ minimum threshold
The honest alternative
Prolific and UserTesting are the computable versions — published floors and per-test rates. Give them the minutes you were giving the points.
