1099-NEC vs 1099-K — and why neither one decides your tax

The verdict

For 2026, NEC forms start at $2,000 and 1099-K is back to $20,000 + 200 sales — and you owe tax either way.

Two forms confuse every beginner. The 1099-NEC reports payments for services — for 2026, payers send it at $2,000 or more (the threshold moved under the OBBBA). The 1099-K reports payment-app and marketplace transactions, and for 2026 it is back to the old line: over $20,000 AND more than 200 transactions.

Here is the part the forms never say: the thresholds decide what paperwork the payer files, not what you owe. Self-employment tax starts at $400 of net profit whether any form exists or not. 'No form' is not 'no tax'; it is just no reminder.

Keep your own records from day one — the monthly audit sheet in the kit exists for this — and no January envelope can surprise you.

The math, shown

  • 1099-K (2026): $20,000 + 200 transactions
